Newport Community Schools

Founded in 2001, the Newport Community School (NCS) provides high-quality, out-of-school time programs to Thompson Middle School and Rogers High School students and families attending grades 6 - 12.

Initial funding came from a five-year grant from the United Way of RI to serve middle school children. Subsequent funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Initiative (21st CCLC) extended NCS’s reach into the city’s only high school, resulting in a seamless delivery of service occurs from grades 6 – 12, as both schools are governed by the same procedures. (Interestingly, this coming fall, NCS will begin serving fifth graders, as the district moves fifth graders into the middle school.) Funding and support from a number of other sources—including but not limited to Ronald McDonald House Charities, Newport Partnership for Families, Prince Charitable Trusts, and the TriMix Foundation—have helped NCS expand and grow as an organization.

NCS blends lifelong learning into its programs for children and youth. Additionally they place high emphasis on family engagement. Read more
