Rhode Island offers many promising opportunities for developing a well coordinated, well supported afterschool system across the state. Because of our small size, it is easy to convene statewide meetings, bringing resources to the entire state. This promotes statewide networking and contacts: we can all get to know one another face-to-face. This capacity to easily develop relationships with stakeholders all across the state is invaluable in developing a system of support and advocacy that effectively supports afterschool efforts in every community in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island has a history of collaborative partnerships working together in many areas of human services, education, arts, the environment, and other civic issues. RIASPA follows in that long tradition. Successful collaborations include a number of highly visible and established out-of-school time partnerships, including the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Initiative, Child Opportunity Zones (COZs), the Providence After School Alliance, and Community Schools. Recently, we have seen the emergence of new partnerships as well, including the Woonsocket After School Coalition (WASC), the Washington County Coalition for Children, and the Newport County Collaborative for Youth. This significant level of positive energy and activity in our field among a number of networks around the state provides a solid foundation and a source of information, influence, and membership for RIASPA's work.

A statewide alliance of those concerned about afterschool services can:

  • Coordinate efforts of all interested parties
  • Collaboratively develop and pursue a statewide agenda
  • Develop public policy and work with policy makers
  • Advocate for resources
  • Advocate for expanded access to programs
  • Increase public understanding and support
  • Promote a more positive perception of young people
  • Provide information about locations of programs and program contacts
  • Improve program quality through networking, training, and technical assistance
  • Share information about promising and/or innovative practices
  • Promote and showcase model programs
